Archaeology holiday on Menorca
About our archaeology holiday on Menorca
Our archaeology holiday on Menorca is a great way to get up close and personal with archaeological remains going back over 3500 years. Menorca is equidistant in the Mediterranean and plays home to the 2nd deepest natural harbour in the world (Pearl Harbour is the deepest) and has acted as a magnet to every ancient civilisation that we know about dating back to the Bronze Age. Evidence of the Talayotic tribes, Roman and Moorish occupations are abundant and accessible all over the island. In fact, Menorca has the highest concentration of pre Christian archaeology in Europe and, for this reason, is in the process of becoming a World Heritage site. This holiday, whilst informative, is conducted in a light and friendly manner and is designed to appeal to all levels. Highly agreeable accommodation, fine food and wine, plus a great atmosphere within the group shares top billing with the course content itself.
Our Archaeology group leaders
Alongside a deep and intimate knowledge of their subject, it's important to us that our course tutors are approachable, friendly and able to communicate on all levels. With this in mind, we're delighted to be working with Elena Sintes Olives and Sabina Llambias Pell. As a collective, they run Menorca Arqueològica, a company that specialises in the ancient history of the island. Elena has a doctorate in prehistoric archaeology from the University of Barcelona and gives talks all over the island on the pre history of Menorca. Sabina, who is half American and half Spanish, speaks perfect English and secured a degree in Medieval History, also from the University of Barcelona. Both are great communicators and have a sense of fun which they bring to their chosen subject.
Should you decide to join us, you'll be staying at the charming and family run Hotel Loar, which is located right on the square in the typical Menorcan village of Ferreries. Ferreries is located in the middle of our island and is close to nearly all of the sites that we'll visit during the week. The location of the hotel also makes this holiday a genuine cultural experience and there are plenty of local shops, plus bars/restaurants nearby. The hotel itself has a lively locals bar and we will also take some of our meals here during the week.
